Hi, I’m Mario

I’m a data scientist and builder based in Amsterdam. By day I work as a data scientist at ABN AMRO; the rest of the time I build things that turn messy real-world data into something a person can actually trust and act on — usually maps, satellites, and routes.

Lately that has meant two products that are live and in use: Vidimus, a public, open-source evidence record for EU deforestation compliance that reads satellite archives plot by plot, and DataFirst Logistics, a route-optimization platform that quietly saves transport companies 15–30% of their driven kilometres. A couple of smaller things are below too.

How I like to work

Two small principles I keep coming back to.

Say what you did, not what you hope. The tools I build are careful to distinguish we looked and found nothing from we could not look — because collapsing those two is how software quietly lies. I try to hold my own claims to the same standard.

Work without the sneer. Cynicism makes every task heavier than it needs to be. You still have to do the work; you only choose whether to drag it. I like this piece on building systems so the boring parts cost less willpower over time.
